Applying the Configuration

Changes to the region configuration can only be made in SANmanager from a single storage server at a time.  SANmanager will open the configuration in READ-ONLY mode and as changes are made will lock the region so no other storage server can change it.  (The storage server whose SANmanager has the configuration lock is indicated in the SANcentral interface by the padlock icon over the storage server.)

When you Apply the configuration the changes are implemented and communicated to the other storage servers in the region. SANmanager, if open on other storage servers, will automatically refresh when the Apply completes to display the most current configuration. After the Apply, the lock is released so that other storage servers may change the configuration.

As you make changes in the configuration in SANmanager, the status bar at the bottom  of the interface displays Not Applied until your changes are applied.  If you attempt to exit SANmanager without applying, you will see a message reminding you to apply your configuration. If you don’ t apply before exiting, then all changes will be lost and you revert to the last applied configuration.

NOTE: If a storage server cannot get the configuration lock to make and apply changes, please note that any server with Unreachable status in the SANcentral interface will have to be set offline in order for any other server to acquire the lock. If a storage server cannot acquire the configuration lock when no servers are Unreachable, re-open SANmanager on the server that last had the lock to release the lock. To release the lock, make a configuration change and either (1) apply the change (which releases the lock after a successful apply) or (2) exit SANmanager without applying the change, which releases the lock after the GUI is closed.

To apply configuration changes:

  1. In SANmanager, select File > Apply (or CTRL-A). This applies the configuration to the local storage server and remote storage servers.

  1. If you have enabled the Create ERD with Each Apply option, you will see a message asking if you wish to make an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD). Click OK to create the ERD.

We recommend that you do this now. If a hardware (e.g., disk failure) or software failure occurs, it will be easy to recreate your configuration using this ERD. Keep the ERD in a safe place. If you are using AIM, special considerations are needed, refer to Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. You will see a message telling you that the configuration was applied successfully. Click OK. (If you receive a warning message, refer to Apply Warning Message for instructions.)
