Replacing a Storage Server Adapter

To replace a storage server adapter because of a failure, do the following:

  1. If necessary, stop and then shut down the storage server and replace the failing hardware.

  2. Power on the storage server and verify that this new channel is using the DCS driver by opening Windows Device Manager and expanding DataCore Fibre-Channel Adapters. Verify that the new card appears in the list.

  3. Open SANmanager and select the Channels tab.

  4. In the left pane, expand the SDS folder and select the storage server. Both the old and new channels are displayed, but the old channel is “offline” (indicated by red X on the channel.)

  5. In the right pane, select the offline channel and choose Replace from the context menu.

  6. The Candidate Channels dialog box appears. Select the replacement channel from the Valid Channel Replacement Candidates list, and click Replace.

  7. Apply the configuration.

  8. If necessary, restart all application servers that had virtual volume mappings on the failed channel.

Notes:

  • After the Replace option, the alias of the channel remains the same and the virtual volume mappings are updated. The alias is assigned to the new channel, and the original channel is deleted. If the storage server is refreshed or restarted before the original card is removed, the original card will be rediscovered and given a new default name.

  • Mulit-port cards, such as QLA2XX2, have at least two fibre channel ports. You must treat replacement of such cards as if you were replacing distinct HBAs (2 or more). In other words, there will be two (or more)  WWNs to discover and SANmanager will display two (or more) server channels for this HBA.
