Assigning Channels to Application Servers

For the most part, channels are automatically discovered by SANsymphony software and can be assigned by dragging and dropping from folders in the Channels tab. In certain cases, they will have to be manually added. This topic details assigning channels after they are automatically discovered. (For instructions on manually adding channels, refer to Manually Adding Channels to Application Servers.)

For non-Windows operating systems with iSCSI:

Most non-Windows operating systems will log out of an iSCSI target if they do not see a mapped LUN, or are not doing any I/O to that LUN. If your application server operating system behaves in this manner, iSCSI channels will not be automatically discovered and those channels must be manually added.

Before you begin:

  • Have your list of application server port information handy, refer to Gathering Application Server Port Information, if necessary.

  • Consider using Soft WWNs for Fibre Channels. The Soft WWN feature and allows you to replace a Fibre Channel HBA without having to remap to the new WWN. In the event of a card failure, this feature makes the channel replacement quick and simple and we highly recommend its use. Refer to Using Soft WWNs for Fibre Channels and follow the instructions, if desired.

  • If you change the default channel name, channel names must be unique within a region.

To assign automatically discovered channels:

  1. In SANmanager, click the Channels tab.

  2. In the left pane, expand the App Servers folder and select the Available App Channels folder. A list of available channels is displayed in the right pane.

Refer to your list of application server port information to ensure that you are correctly matching up ports to the appropriate application server.

  1. In the right pane, select the channel alias under the Channel Name column  to be assigned to the application server and drag the channel to the appropriate application server name in the left pane and drop it. When the channel is dropped onto the application server, it will be removed from the list of available channels.

  2. Repeat this procedure until you have assigned the necessary application server channels.

  3. Apply the configuration. Your application server channels are configured.
