Adding Disks to NMV pools

Now that you have created NMV pools, you need to add resources to the pool. Only raw, basic, unpartitioned disks with a signature can be added; disks that have been formatted or partitioned using Disk Management cannot be added to pools.

After adding disks to pools, you will not see the volumes in Disk Management, but must use SANsymphony software tools to see them.

If you wish to use a disk which was previously partitioned, you must remove the partitions before you can add the disk to the pool.

A pool can contain all dual path or all standard raw disks—not both. The type of raw disk you add to the pool FIRST determines the pool type. If you want to use the pool with Dual Path (DP) storage, drag a dual path raw disk into the pool first. Refer to About Dual Path before creating pools with DP storage.

In SANmanager, follow these steps to add disks to the pool:

  1. In the Managed Volumes tab, expand the pool folder for the appropriate storage server in the left pane.

  2. Select the Raw Disk folder in the left pane. All available disks are listed in the right pane. Only raw, unpartitioned, basic disks will be displayed. Dual Path raw disks SANsymphony dprawdisk Adding Disks to NMV Poolsare distinguished from raw disks SANsymphony rawdisk Adding Disks to NMV Pools by their icon.

If you populate a pool with  DP raw disks,  a new dual path pool is automatically created on the partner storage server. The DP icon disappears from the dragged disks and the status of the pool will display Initializing.

  1. In the right pane, select one or more disks and drag the disks from the right pane directly onto the appropriate pool name listed in the left pane.

  2. Apply the configuration.

For pools with DP raw disks, the status on the partner storage servers will be Foreign. You should now import the pool on those storage servers.

  1. You have the ability to mirror the disks in your pools to make them fault tolerant. This step is optional. Refer to Creating Mirrors in NMV pools for instructions.

The next step is creating Network Managed Volumes (NMVs) from the pools, refer to Creating NMVs from Pools.
