Creating NMVs from Pools

Application server operating systems may have limitations on how they work with NMVs. Dynamic NMVs are created with a default size of 2 terabytes (TB). Some application server types may require that LUNs be less than the default size. After virtual volumes are created from NMVs, they can be resized prior to use by changing the virtual volume size in Virtual Volume Properties under the Virtual Volumes tab in SANmanager.

Dynamic NMVs

NMVs created from dynamic NMV pools can be created singly or in multiples using the following methods. NMVs from dynamic pools are created with a default logical size of 2 TB.

For dynamic pools, NMVs can only be created if the pool usage is less than the Alert Threshold; otherwise, disks need to be added to the pool.

Add Another Network Managed Volume – Use this option to quickly create single volumes from dynamic pools.
  1. In the Managed Volumes tab, select a dynamic pool in the left pane and choose Add Another Network Managed Volume from the context menu.

  2. Apply the configuration.

Add Multiple Network Managed Volumes – Use this option to create one or more volumes from dynamic pools.
  1. In the Managed Volumes tab, select a dynamic pool in the left pane and choose Add Multiple Network Managed Volumes from the context menu.

  2. In the dialog box, enter the number of volumes to create and click OK.

  3. Apply the configuration.

Static NMVs

NMVs created from static NMV pools are not created with a default size. The size is fixed and allocated upon creation.

Add Static Network Managed Volumes – Use this option to create one or more volumes from static pools.
  1. In the Managed Volumes tab, select a dynamic pool in the left pane and choose Add Multiple Network Managed Volumes from the context menu.

  2. In the dialog box, enter the number of volumes to create in the box provided.

  3. In the Preallocated Size area, select the size measurement (MB, GB, or TB) and enter the number in the text box.

  4. Click OK.

  5. Apply the configuration.

Now that you have created NMVs,  the next step is to create virtual volumes that are later mapped to application servers for use. Refer to Creating Virtual Volumes.
