Gathering Application Server Port Information

The SAN configuration can include either Fibre Channel (FC) connections, iSCSI connections, or both. In this topic, you will prepare for channel configuration by listing pertinent application server information to use when adding application servers and channels to your SAN.

For iSCSI, before you begin gathering your information, ensure you have established initiator/target connections. (Refer to Establish Initiator/Target Connections for iSCSI, if necessary.)

Gather Application Server and Channel Information

Make a list of pertinent information for your application servers and corresponding channel port identifiers.  The list should include the following information for each application server, as shown below: 1) application server name, 2) operating system type, 3) FC WWNs for installed HBAs, and 4) iSCSI node names for installed NICs.

Finding Application Server Fibre Channel WWNs and iSCSI Node Names

  • For each FC port, you will need the FC port World Wide Name (WWN)— a unique 16-digit hexadecimal number, such as 21000030D9001234. This identifier is hard-coded into every FC host bus adapter (HBA). These WWNs (similar in concept to the MAC address in Ethernet cards) may be obtained from the HBA BIOS utility or HBA management software.

  • For each iSCSI initiator port, you will need the iSCSI node name (device address). These device addresses are automatically generated by the iSCSI initiator management software. They are automatically discovered by the SANsymphony advanced services for iSCSI. Typically, these will start with ‘iqn’.  Obtain these addresses using one of the following methods:

  • From the application server iSCSI initiator management software, such as Microsoft iSCSI Initiator, Properties dialog box, General tab.

  • Issue an iSCSI logon from the application server using operating system-specific commands. This action allows the storage server to display the application server name in the Trace Console in the SANcentral interface. Open SANcentral>Tools>SANsymphony Console>Trace Console>SCSI Ports. In SCSI Ports, select the iSCSI target port in the left pane. In the right pane, scroll through the messages until you find the iSCSI ID of the new iSCSI initiator (default names usually begin with “iqn”). You can double-click on the message to copy and paste the iSCSI ID.

Now that you have a list of your iSCSI and FC adapter information, refer to Adding Application Servers to the SAN  to add the application server to the SAN configuration and define the operating system type.
