Preparing Disks for NMV Pools

For NMVs, decide which disks will be used in NMV pools. These disks must be online, initialized in GPT layout, unallocated basic disks. Windows dynamic disks cannot be used and no partitions of any kind can exist on the disk as the whole LUN is used. In SANsymphony software, it is possible to create different pools for different purposes, just remember that a minimum of one disk per pool must be used.

NOTE: After disks are under the control of SANsymphony software, the disks will be marked as Unknown and Unreadable in Windows Disk Management and must be controlled and monitored in SANsymphony software.

To Prepare Disks for Use in NMV Pools:
  1. In Windows Server Manager, open Diagnostics>Device Manager.

  2. Select Disk Drives, and choose Scan for Hardware Changes from the context menu. Ensure that all disks connected to the storage server are discovered.

  3. In Windows Server Manager, open Storage>Disk Management.

  4. Ensure that all the disks that you will be using in your pools are online, initialized, unallocated, raw disks. (If you wish to use a disk which was previously partitioned, you must remove all partitions before the disk can be used in an NMV pool. The entire disk will be managed.)

In the example below, Disks 1 and 2 (unallocated raw disks) will be used in an NMV pool.
