Creating AIM Set Candidates

In order to create AIM sets, you must first create virtual volumes and then assign them to be used as either source or destination virtual volumes for the sets.

Consider the following when creating and assigning your AIM set candidates:
  • Each set must have one source virtual volume and a minimum of one destination virtual volume. AIM allows mirroring between a single source virtual volume and single or multiple destination virtual volumes. Destination virtual volumes should be on different servers (usually remote) than the source servers. (AIM virtual volumes cannot be used as both source AND destination on the same server at the same time.)

  • Destination virtual volumes must be created with the primary volume of a standard mirror (not multipath) from the destination server.  (Source virtual volumes can be created using primary or secondary volumes of a mirror (any type) from the source server.)

  • You will need one AIM set for each application server volume you want to replicate.

  • The destination virtual volume must be the same size or larger than the AIM source virtual volume.

  • AIM source and destination virtual volumes in a set must be all static (standard protected) or all dynamic (NMVs). If NMVs are to be used, all must be the same type (dynamic, static striped, or static spanned).

  • The source virtual volume is mapped to and used by application servers, creating the basis of your source data.

  • You can “AIM” existing SANsymphony virtual volumes that have been in use on application servers. In this case, these virtual volumes would be used as the source virtual volumes of AIM sets.

Follow these steps in SANmanager to create and assign the AIM set candidates:

  1. In the Virtual Volumes tab, create virtual volumes as needed to be used in your AIM sets. (Refer to Creating Virtual Volumes, if necessary.)

  2. In the AIM tab, assign the virtual volumes to be used as source candidates.

    1. Open the SDS folder in the upper left pane and select the source server.

    2. Open the AIM folder in the lower left pane.

    3. In the upper right pane, drag the virtual volumes that you want to designate as source virtual volumes to the Source folder in the lower left pane. Source volumes can be primary or secondary member volumes.

  1. Assign the virtual volumes to be used as destination candidates.

    1. Select the destination server from the upper left pane.

    2. In the upper right pane, drag the virtual volumes that you want to designate as destination virtual volumes to the Destination folder in the lower left pane. Destination volumes must be primary member volumes.

  1. In the menu bar, select the File menu.

  2. Apply the new configuration.

At this point in time you have created virtual volumes eligible to be used in AIM sets. Later in the steps outlined in Getting Started with AIM, you will create matched sets of source and destination virtual volumes, referred to as AIM sets. This is performed using AIM Source Manager.

To create AIM Groups (optional), refer to Creating AIM Groups.
