Disk Path Manager

Disk Path Manager shows you the physical disks seen by ports on the local storage server managed by SANsymphony software. By default, information for Fibre Channel ports are displayed, but  iSCSI ports information can be viewed  by selecting Show All Ports from the Initiator Ports context menu. All information displayed in Disk Path Manager is in the context of disks and ports. Disk Path Manager is available from the SANsymphony Console, which is accessed from the Tools menu in the SANcentral interface.

To open the Disk Path Manager Help, select the tool snap-in in the console tree and click the Help button ( SANsymphony help Disk Path Manager ). The Help button on the toolbar is context specific. Alternatively, you can select the tool snap-in and choose Help from the shortcut menu.

Below is a description of the column information when the Disks component is selected in Disk Path Manager.

 Disks Component – Column Fields

Disk Number

Identifies the disk number, as found in Windows Disk Management.

Active Target Port

Port selected for use in mapping.

Active Initiator Port

Port selected for use in mapping.

Number of Paths

Number of different paths possible to use.

Preferred Path

Yes or No. Yes is displayed if the disk is bound to the initiator port path by using the Action menu item.

Property

Identifies the role of the individual storage device on the storage server.  Available properties include:

BootDisk – Identifies the boot disk of the storage server.

Standard – Identifies a volume with a Windows file system.

StandardManaged – Identifies a disk with protected volume.

StandardRawDisk – Identifies a raw, non-partitioned disk. (These disks are available in the Raw Disks folder for use with NMVs.)

Hidden – Identifies a volume that is unreadable in Windows Disk Management. Any disk not preformatted with Windows data will be automatically hidden when discovered by Disk Manager. (This property is only available when Proxy Mode is enabled.)

NMV PoolDiskHidden –  Identifies a disk in an NMV pool.

SDS MirrorHidden  –   Identifies a mirror disk presented from another storage server.

ProxiedHidden – Identifies a disk marked as a Proxied Volume and unreadable in Windows Disk Management.

 

Below is a description of the column information when a specific disk number is selected in the Disks component in Disk Path Manager.

 Disk Number  - Column Fields

Initiator Port

Port sending data transmissions.

Target Port

Port receiving data transmissions.

State

Possible states: Active, Inactive.

Status

Online or offline

Preferred

Yes or No. Yes is displayed if the disk is bound to the initiator port path by using the Action menu item.

Address

Location of the disk, in order: Port number, path ID, target ID, LUN

Below is a description of the column information when a specific initiator port is selected in the Disks component in Disk Path Manager.

 Initiator Port – Column Fields

Disk Number

Identifies the disk number, as found in Windows Disk Management.

Target Port WWN

The unique hard-coded 8-byte identifier for the target port.

Target Port

Port receiving data transmissions.

LUN

The SCSI identifier of a logical unit (which corresponds to a virtual disk) of a storage device.

Property

Context Menu Items

The table below provides the context menu items available in Disk Path Manager. Context menus are activated when an element is selected and the appropriate mouse button is clicked. Review any referenced topics for additional information.

Selection

Menu Items

Select a disk in the left pane, and  a port in the right pane.

Bind/Unbind the disk to the initiator port path. Select to enable/disable this option to set a preferred path if more than one initiator path exists for a disk. Restart the computer to activate this option.

Show Aliases – select to display the ports in the right pane identified by alias names.

Show World Wide Name – select to display the ports in the right pane identified by World Wide Name.

Show All Ports – select to display all fibre-channel and iSCSI ports and their associated information.

Select a specific initiator port in the console tree.

Port Options>LUN Distribution to enable/disable LUN distribution for the selected port.  This option is enabled by default. Refer to Enabling/Disabling LUN Distribution.

Port Options>I/O Distribution – This feature is not yet enabled in the SANsymphony product.
