About Regions

A SAN region is defined as one or many storage servers grouped together into a physical machine pool and sharing a common configuration (including mappings). This machine pool limits the scope in which properties and rules controlling the SAN can be applied. Configuration settings, information, and changes are only know within the SAN in which they happen; only storage servers defined in the same SAN region will be able to exchange static and dynamic configuration information. Usually, a single region is sufficient for your SAN.

When you first install SANsymphony software on a storage server, a temporary region name is assigned which defaults to the name of your computer with the license number appended. This initial temporary region name must be changed immediately after installation to the region name of your choosing. Storage servers that need to know about each other and share static and dynamic configuration information must be members of the same region. (See Changing the Temporary Region Name.)

With the Status tab active in the SANcentral interface, you can make all changes in the configuration of the region by accessing Actions>Region from the Menu bar. The three actions on the top of the Region menu are only performed on the local storage server. The four actions on the bottom of the Region menu can also be performed by right-clicking on the selected storage server in the left pane of the SANcentral interface.
